Local Conservatives are pleased to announce further details on the roadmap to removing the City Mayoral position once the party win a majority on 4th of May.
Thousands of local people support our commitment to remove the Mayoral system in Leicester and like them we believe the time is now for the overpaid Mayoral position to be scrapped.
If a majority of Conservatives are elected on 4th May a motion will immediately be put before the new Council Chamber to allow Councillors to officially vote to remove the position and replace it with a Cabinet-style system.
The Conservative City Mayor, Sanjay Modhwadia and the Leader of the Conservative group along with their team of Councillors will work alongside Council officers to organise the removal of the Mayoral system and facilitate its replacement. We believe that this work will be completed in around 10-12 weeks.
We want the public to be kept up to date on progress of this change in local governance, the Conservative group will give regular updates throughout the transition process but speed and flexibility from the Officer team will be vital.
Whilst the process is being undertaken the funding for all capital projects across the City will be paused. The Conservative cabinet team will be working with Officers to formulate a new budget and capital expenditure programme as planned within months of taking office. This will include the launch of the ‘Great Leicester Clean Up’ and the new ‘High-Street Investment’ programme.
Once the transition period is over and the Officer teams have completed their transition work, a special meeting of the Council Chamber will be held to officially terminate the role of City Mayor and our city will finally revert to a cabinet style system, saving us all thousands of pounds each year.
The Conservative Mayoral Candidate, Cllr Sanjay Modhwadia said:
