Today, Leicester Conservatives have expressed strong support for Midlands sports clubs, including Coventry City FC and Nottingham Forest FC, who have called on the Government to reinstate the direct rail link between Coventry, Leicester, and Nottingham. This project, led by Midlands Connect, aims to reconnect the three major cities for the first time in two decades, providing significant economic and environmental benefits to the region.
The proposed rail link would reintroduce a direct, half-hourly service, reducing travel times between Coventry and Leicester to 40 minutes, and between Coventry and Nottingham to 70 minutes. This will offer a sustainable and reliable alternative to driving for both sports fans and other travellers, helping to reduce emissions and support the Government's net-zero targets. The new link is expected to cut emissions by 80% compared to car journeys along the same route.
Leicester Conservatives believe this project will boost local businesses and strengthen the region’s economy by increasing attendance at major sports venues and entertainment events across the Midlands. The increased connectivity will also create new employment, education, and leisure opportunities for the local population.
Leicester East MP, Shivani Raja, commented on the importance of reinstating the rail link: "Reinstating the direct rail link between Coventry, Leicester, and Nottingham is crucial for improving connectivity, boosting local economies, and providing a sustainable alternative to driving. I have raised this issue in Parliament, and while the Government's responses have so far been non-committal, it’s clear that more needs to be done. Midlands Connect’s proposal offers real opportunities for economic growth, reduced emissions, and better access to jobs and leisure. I urge the Government to stop delaying and make this project a priority for our region."
Cllr Rae Bhatia, Leader of the Leicester Conservative Group, also underscored the significance of this project for the Midlands. He emphasised the positive environmental impact and the potential for boosting local business activity. Leicester Conservatives call on the Department for Transport and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport to move forward with the proposal, recognising the wide-reaching benefits for sports fans, local businesses, and residents.
