The Leader of the Leicester Conservative Group, Cllr Hemant Bhatia, has raised concerns about the Labour government's decision to scrap the Winter Fuel Allowance, a critical support that helps many elderly residents in Leicester cope with rising energy costs.
In a letter addressed to City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby, Cllr Bhatia criticized the decision made by Liz Kendall, MP for Leicester West and Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, for cutting the Winter Fuel Allowance. This cut impacts nearly 31,000 pensioners in Leicester, many of whom rely on the allowance to stay warm during the colder months. Cllr Bhatia stressed that this decision could force vulnerable residents to choose between heating their homes or putting food on the table.
Cllr Bhatia also highlighted the need for strong leadership from the City Council during this challenging time, urging the City Mayor to ensure that all affected residents are aware of alternative support and measures to alleviate the financial burden caused by the removal of this allowance.
