Leicester Conservatives are calling on the Labour-led City Council to reverse their harmful decision to cut Council Tax Support (CTS), which has left thousands of vulnerable residents across the city facing mounting financial pressure. The cuts, which reduce the support provided to low-income households to help with their Council Tax, are set to lead to a sharp rise in arrears and additional strain on many who are struggling with their cost of living.
All Conservative councillors stood with the public and voted against these cuts, fighting to protect those most in need.
Despite these efforts, the following councillors voted in favour of the cuts:
- Abbey ward: Councillor Agath
- Thurncourt ward: Councillor Aldred
- Braunstone Park and Rowley Fields ward: Councillor Barton, Councillor Halford, Councillor Singh Johal
- Evington ward: Councillor Bajaj
- Spinney Hills ward: Councillor Batool, Councillor Malik
- Humberstone & Hamilton ward: Councillor Bonham, Councillor Kaur Saini, Councillor Joel
- Saffron ward: Councillor Cassidy, Councillor Cutkelvin
- Westcotes ward: Councillor Clarke, Councillor Russell
- Western ward: Councillor Cole, Councillor O’Neill, Councillor Dempster
- Stoneygate ward: Councillor Mohammed, Councillor Sood, Councillor Surti
- Eyres Monsell ward: Councillor Pantling, Councillor Pickering
- Troon ward: Councillor Singh Sangha
- Knighton ward: Councillor Moore, Councillor Whittle
- Fosse ward: Councillor Zaman, Councillor Waddington
In addition, City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby supported these cuts, disregarding the concerns of struggling families and individuals in Leicester.
Cllr Hemant Rae Bhatia, Leader of Leicester Conservatives, said, “It’s appalling that Labour councillors and Sir Peter Soulsby have chosen to take away crucial support for vulnerable residents. This decision is out of touch with the reality of life for thousands of people in Leicester. We will not stand by while people are driven into financial hardship.”
Cllr Rae Bhatia continued, “Every single Conservative councillor voted against these cuts because we know how vital this support is. We will continue to fight for those who need it the most and, if elected to lead the council, we will restore full Council Tax Support to ensure that no one is left behind.”
Leicester Conservatives are committed to providing real, permanent solutions to safeguard vital services and help those most in need. They have pledged to make reinstating CTS a priority if they take control of the council in future elections.
