For Immediate Release
Leicester City Council has demonstrated cross-party support for the elderly by unanimously supporting an amended motion addressing the pressing issue of Winter Fuel Allowance changes, which risk leaving thousands across the city in hardship this winter. The motion, originally submitted by Cllr Nigel Porter, Liberal Democrat Group Leader and seconded by Conservative Group Leader, Cllr Hemant Rae Bhatia, condemned the Labour Government's withdrawal of the universal Winter Fuel Allowance. Following cross-party dialogue, it was amended to reflect broader consensus, ensuring unanimous support.
The amended motion commits the council to:
1) Writing to the government—urging Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Cabinet member for Work and Pensions, and Leicester West MP, Liz Kendall, to reconsider the means-testing of Winter Fuel Payments and provide additional funding to protect vulnerable pensioners.
2) Mobilising council resources—to promote Pension Credit uptake and provide support through energy advice services.
Cllr Hemant Rae Bhatia stated: "We are pleased that this important motion gained unanimous support after the amendment. It demonstrates that regardless of political affiliation, we can unite to advocate for the dignity and safety of Leicester’s pensioners. The Winter Fuel Allowance has long been a lifeline, and its removal is unacceptable."
Cllr Nigel Porter added: "This is a step forward in addressing a deeply unfair policy. Ensuring pensioners are warm and secure during the winter is about compassion, dignity, and justice. The collaborative support for this motion is a testament to what we can achieve when we put residents first."
Cllr Patrick Kitterick, Leader of the Green group, commented: "Fuel poverty is an immediate crisis, but it’s also a symptom of a broken system that needs reform. The removal of the Winter Fuel Allowance will cause thousands across Leicester to live in extreme discomfort this winter. We must continue pushing for change at the national level."
The unanimous support from all councillors, including Labour members, signals a united front in opposing these changes. Leicester City Council is committed to proactive outreach, ensuring that vulnerable pensioners access the support they are entitled to.
The Conservative, Liberal Democrat, and Green groups have also pledged to sign and promote Age UK's "Save the Winter Fuel Payment for Struggling Pensioners" petition and urge all residents to join the campaign.
